Everything you need for a puppy!!!!
Hey friends!!
A little bit of a random post, BUT lots of y’all have been asking about what toys/crates/products etc. we got for Honey and which ones I’d recommend for new puppy parents! It was so difficult knowing what to get as new puppy parents (and luckily I had so many suggestions via DM) so I wanna share all the good suggestions/tips/links for you all!!
bringing your puppy home
Almost all of the stuff I’m sharing on today’s post is stuff we have. If it’s not our exact stuff it’s similar (aka toys will probably be a little different & bully sticks we love, but may be a different brand).
We have all of those exact items above except the Furbo (which is on my list!! It’s a dog camera & it pops out treats. I’m not sure if we need it just yet since we don’t leave her by herself (unless she’s in her cage) - but I do want to get one when we start leaving her alone outside of the cage, probably when she’s 1 year old. We also don’t have the steps (i’m still convincing Brandon on that one haha).
Leash, collar, tag, poop holder/bags: We got hers from Wild One. It’s all so cute, i’m obsessed. They also have toys too but we haven’t tried them out! We have the smallest size in the collar and harness.
Dog bed: We have multiple beds for Honey. The white one I linked above we have and put in our car in the back seat. She loves just laying there on car rides! The mat I linked above is for her cage that she sleeps in. We also have a big rug/faux fur bed that doubles as a rug from PAW. I also have a discount for 10% off “NICOLE10” so if you want to invest in one make sure to use the discount! I love it for the look honestly haha!! Honey does love it too though! I’ll attach a picture below.
puppy food, treats & toys
Puppy/dog food: The best dog food brand EVER! Our vet highly suggests this over anything else! It is a little pricey, but I don’t mind spending the extra $$ for a brand I know is great. We started out with a grain free, but our vet told us that grain free can actually be really bad for dogs (and serious side effects, our vet has had dogs die from it - which is crazy since you’d think it’d be better)! Obvi I’m not an expert so please don’t fight me on this lol. Just passing on info I’ve learned and don’t really want to chance it!
Training treats: I don’t have any training treats I recommend (we personally just use her dog food as treats cause she likes it that much haha). I did link one kind of puppy treats that look good! You may need to try a few different ones if you have a picky pup like we do!
Toys: I linked some toys on amazon that are the same type that Honey loves! Honestly she just loves the most obnoxious squeaky toys that make the most noise LOL. You guys HAVE to get this hedgehog toy though; I swear every dog loves it! If you have a bigger dog who really tears up toys; I recommend the Kong brand toys cause they won’t break like the fluffy, squeaky toys will! Oh and I also linked 2 cute baskets that you could use to store your puppy’s toys!
potty training
Turf potty pad: We use this and put it on our apartment deck because hello potty training in an apartment. It’s interesting lol. No it’s actually really not bad with this turf pad, I seriously don’t know what we’d do without it - best purchase we’ve made for her hands down! I also linked the “Skip To My Loo” scent spray that you put on the turf pad to attract your pup to pee on the pad. Also the “Wee Care” & plastic containers with the powder. The Wee Care is used to clean the turf pad every few days, and the plastic containers & powder are used to absorb the pee into almost a solid to create for an easy clean up! We got the small sized turf pad, and at first thought it’d be too small, but it’s really all you need - the perfect size!
Training bell: We trained Honey to ring the bell when she has to go potty so that we don’t have to watch her 24/7 and guess when she has to go! It works so well.
Furry Freshness: The best cleaner to get rid of the odor AND underlying smell for pee, poo & puke. You need this so that your pup doesn’t keep smelling her/his same scent and peeing in the same spot.
grooming
This is the brand we use for shampoo & conditioner and love it! I also have this detangler which is super helpful for longer haired dogs. In the process of buying this exact brush now - it has the most amazing reviews!
sleeping
This Snuggle Puppy is the BEST! Helped us so much with Honey sleeping because it has a heartbeat, so it imitates her sleeping with her brothers & sisters! What also helped us with crate training (Honey honestly learned so fast - it took us about half a week!). The first night she was so exhausted from her plane ride she slept, but the next day was a nightmare… I believe Brandon literally referred to her as “demon dog” and “what have we done”. HAHA. So bad and he didn’t mean that, but it was soooo bad at first! Here’s what helped Honey learn in less than a week for crate training:
x Blanket over the crate. Over the whole entire crate so that she can’t see anything (this was huge for us).
x Snuggle puppy
x Pad or blanket inside of crate
x My shirt - so she had my scent!
x Leaving a light on
x Leaving the TV on low or having music on (this was huge for us).
x Letting her whine/cry .. it’s so sad, BUT if you give in she will think whenever she whines that you’ll come and rescue her. However, if she does start whining in the middle of the night you can grab your pup to take them potty, but immediately put them back in the crate. No snuggles or playing.
surgery (for your pup getting fixed or anything else)
So random, but I wish I would’ve known what to get when Honey got spayed! I loved the airplane pillow option at first, but we found out she could actually reach her incision so that’s a no go! We prefer the soft cone OR the baby onesie works so thank your pup can live free without the cone but can’t lick the incision.
Okay WOW. So much info, I hope this helped some of you puppy parents! Enjoy your new addition to your fam!!! Best decision ever.
